C+C=Maxigross "NEO vol.1"

The Verona-based musical collective C+C=Maxigross has chosen as the cover image for their new album "NEO VOL.1" a work by artist Carlo Zinelli, "Figure stellate con gatti e automobili" (1968), created while he was in a psychiatric hospital after the war.

This choice is not merely decorative; it serves as a gateway into the cosmic and deeply personal world of the album.

The journey begins with "Cosmica Intenzione", a track that invites the listener to surrender to imagination. With eyes closed, it is impossible not to think of Franco Battiato, who spent his career narrating the mysteries of space and the stars until the twilight of his earthly existence. "Nuova Era Oscura" serves as a mirror of contemporary society: an endless pursuit of novelty, where memories are erased as quickly as they are recorded.

"It will be a celebration for those who leave and those who stay,"

sing C+C=Maxigross. Here, they seem to emphasize the inevitability of change, to which we have grown accustomed—perhaps too quickly. Life and death, the known and the unknown, joy and fear converge like opposing forces toward a "new dark era," as proclaimed in the fifth track.

The album’s sound alternates between clarity and raw intensity, moving fluidly from rich, crystalline compositions to tribal, electro-acoustic experimentation. At moments, it feels structured and luminous; at others, chaotic and melancholic, particularly in the closing track, "Ultima Canzone." The lyrics delve into the search for meaning, expressing the existential unease of a generation drifting in darkness, struggling to find the strength to stay afloat.

Could the song, in reality, be an invitation to reflect on the value and fragility of life? Sometimes, one must reach the depths in order to learn how to rise again.

Perhaps this "Nuova Era Oscura" heralds something unexpected and magnificent. Perhaps we should reconsider our own significance, recognizing that we are but a small fragment of an infinite, unknowable, and ineffable whole.

On this subject, Battiato himself stated in 2015, upon the release of his album "Le nostre anime":

"We are as infinite and eternal as the cosmos. In reality, we are prisoners of our habits, fears, and powerful illusions, which prevent us from consciously acknowledging that we are part of the universal whole."

In conclusion, the key theme of the album appears to be transformation. As Nietzsche once wrote, "Become who you are," a phrase he borrowed from Pindar to convey an intimate yet universal message: the essence of the self is in perpetual flux. Each individual is tasked with constructing a personality that continuously seeks balance between nature and culture. Likewise, C+C=Maxigross seem to deliver a raw yet timely message: keeping up with the times means stumbling, struggling, resisting, and ultimately, forgetting—where oblivion becomes necessary in a journey that demands ever more speed and agility.

Il collettivo artistico musicale veronese C+C=Maxigross sceglie come immagine di copertina del nuovo album “NEO VOL.1” un’opera dell’artista Carlo Zinelli “Figure stellate con gatti e automobili” (1968), realizzata mentre era in manicomio, in seguito alla guerra.

La scelta dell’immagine prepara l’ascoltatore all’ingresso in un mondo cosmico soggettivo, unico, che si apre con la prima traccia “Cosmica Intenzione”; il brano lascia ampio spazio all’immaginazione: se ascoltata con gli occhi chiusi, non si può fare a meno che pensare a Franco Battiato, che di spazio e stelle ha raccontato fino all’imbrunire della sua esistenza terrena. "Nuova Era Oscura" rappresenta lo specchio della società attuale: la continua ricerca del nuovo per poter cancellare il più in fretta possibile l’ultimo ricordo registrato in memoria.

“Sarà una festa per chi parte e per chi resta”

dicono i C+C=Maxigross, e ancora, qui sembrano sottolineare il cambiamento al quale tutti siamo abituati ad arrenderci, ed anche velocemente. Vita e morte, noto e ignoto, gioia e paura, come poli opposti si congiungono verso una “nuova era di paura ed oscura”, come dice la traccia 5.

Il suono dell’album oscilla tra limpidezza e intensità ruvida, muovendosi con fluidità da composizioni ricche e cristalline a sperimentazioni tribali ed elettro-acustiche. A tratti appare strutturato e luminoso, altrove caotico e malinconico, come nella traccia di chiusura, "Ultima Canzone". Il testo esplora la ricerca di un senso, esprimendo il disagio esistenziale di una generazione che si sente alla deriva nel buio, faticando a trovare la forza per rimanere a galla.

Un invito a riflettere sull’importanza ed il valore della vita? A volte bisogna toccare gli abissi per imparare a rimanere in superficie.

Forse questa “Nuova Era Oscura” sarà il presagio di qualcosa di inaspettato e magnifico. Quindi, potremmo provare a ridimensionare la nostra importanza, in quanto siamo solo una piccola parte del tutto universale, ignoto e indicibile.

Al riguardo, Battiato nel 2015, all’uscita del suo album “Le nostre anime”, disse:

"Siamo infiniti ed eterni quanto il cosmo. In realtà siamo prigionieri delle nostre abitudini, paure e potenti illusioni, dunque non riusciamo a considerare consapevolmente di essere parte del tutto universale".

In conclusione, la parola chiave dell’album sembra essere “trasformazione”, così come Nietzche disse “divieni ciò che sei”; si tratta di un’esortazione che egli riprende da Pindaro per lanciare un messaggio intimo e universale: il fondamento del nostro io è in continuo cambiamento.

Il compito che viene affidato ad ogni individuo è la creazione di una personalità sempre alla ricerca di una soluzione adatta al conflitto tra natura e cultura. Sembra che anche i C+C=Maxigross attraverso il loro album, vogliano lanciare un messaggio universale, crudo ma più che attuale: stare al passo coi tempi vuol dire inciampare, scalpitare, resistere e dimenticare. Dove l'oblio è necessario al cospetto di un percorso che richiede sempre più velocità e agilità.
