POPULOUS "Isla Diferente"

Andrea Mangia, better known as Populous, hails from the deep South — a presence that is deeply felt in his new album Isla Diferente.

Each track embodies a yearning for exploration and a profound curiosity about the world around us. Populous draws us into the heart of the Earth and the cosmos — the moon, the sea, the soul, the island; where primordial energies intertwine with dub rhythms and Afro-Latin influences.

The album opens hypnotically with the title track Isla Diferente, where Andrea opens a door and invites us to explore the island with a slow, relentless rhythm — a crescendo of sounds that seem to search for the most hidden part of the self. The “Isla Diferente” appears to be a metaphysical place, an abstract atmosphere that transcends sensory knowledge and direct human experience.

This island meets the dáimōn — the key to decoding the soul’s code, revealing the vocation that has always lived within us. Here, music becomes a path for a divine messenger, a guiding spirit hovering in the metaxu — the in-between realm where the soul resides, acting as a bridge between the divine and the human. The third track, Picón, represents the darkest and most esoteric part of the album — the unconscious striving toward the light. Like a looming volcano reminding us of its presence each time we lift our gaze, Picón confronts us with our own hidden shadows.

With Blanco y Verde, Andrea immerses us in the sounds and landscapes of nature. Listening feels like walking through a jungle, where the scent of the landscape overtakes the other senses — especially during the gentlest part of the melody, at minute 1:40. Curiosity and desire surface, pushing us to explore this narrow, mysterious place that nevertheless invites inner discovery.

In Exotic Veneno, Populous transports us to Africa — a rhythmic, passion-saturated Africa, just as we imagine it. The beat, once again, refuses to rest: it is relentless and inquisitive, always in search of the unknown. Through this album, the artist invites us to listen to the sounds of the Earth — the most hidden and unexplored ones — which seamlessly align with those of the cosmos, and therefore with our own boundless, ever-evolving inner world.

Andrea Mangia, meglio noto come Populous, è originario di un profondo sud che si percepisce appieno nel suo nuovo album “Isla Diferente”.

Ogni traccia, racchiude in sé la voglia di ricerca ed esplorazione di tutto ciò che ci circonda. Populous ci trascina nel cuore della Terra e dell’universo; la luna, il mare, l’anima, l’isola; le energie primordiali si fondono con le influenze dub ritmiche e le sonorità afro-latine.

Un ritmo ipnotizzante che si apre con la Traccia “Isla Diferente”: qui Andrea, apre la porta e ci invita ad esplorare l’isola, con un ritmo lento ma incessante; un crescendo di suoni che sembrano volti alla ricerca della parte più nascosta di sé. La “Isla Diferente” sembra essere un luogo metafisico, un’atmosfera astratta che va al di là della conoscenza sensibile e dell’esperienza diretta dell’essere umano.

L’isola si incontra con il dáimōn, cioè la chiave per decifrare il codice dell’anima e che svela la vocazione che è in noi da sempre. Ecco che la musica sembra fare strada ad un messaggero divino, uno spirito guida che aleggia in una zona di mezzo, detta metaxu, la stessa in cui risiede l’anima, e fa da tramite tra Dio e l’uomo. La terza traccia, “Picòn” rappresenta la parte più oscura ed esoterica dell’album; l’inconscio cerca di farsi strada verso la luce. Così come un vulcano imponente, ci ricorda di essere lì ogni volta in cui alziamo lo sguardo, così Picòn ci riporta alla presenza della nostra parte più oscura e nascosta.

Con “Blanco y verde”, Andrea ci trascina nei suoni e nei paesaggi della natura. Durante l’ascolto, sembra di camminare in una giungla, dove l’odore del paesaggio ruba spazio agli altri sensi, durante la parte più dolce della melodia, al minuto 1:40. La curiosità ed il desiderio si fanno spazio pur di esplorare questo posto angusto che, tuttavia, invita alla ricerca di sé.

Con la traccia “Exotic Veneno”, Populous ci porta in Africa: un’Africa ritmica e sfinita di passione, così come la immaginiamo tutti. Il ritmo, anche in questo caso, non si arrende: è incessante e curioso, sempre alla ricerca di ciò che non sa. Attraverso questo album, l’artista ci invita all’ascolto dei suoni della terra, quelli più nascosti e inesplorati, che si accostano bene a quelli dell’universo e quindi anche al nostro mondo interiore, sconfinato e sempre in divenire.
